Peyton: Instead of just sitting here and sulking and being like, why did this have to happen to me? I can take everything that I’ve been through and use it in a good way.

Shelbie: I think it says a lot about the hospital, that they want the family’s perspective, right? They want to know how our experience was and they want to make it better.
Kathryn Burton: It’s better to hear from the people that are going through the experiences, have lived these experiences themselves. That way, we can truly work together to come up with something that’s incredible. The Patient and Family Advisory Council and the Teen and Young Adult Advisory Council, they are true partners in co-designing patient and family centered care, which is at the heart of everything we do at Rady Children’s Health.
Anna Cortés: Our families are validating what works, what doesn’t work, what’s being considered during these meetings to really highlight what’s important to them.
Shelbie: I am a mom of a daughter who has been at Rady Children’s Health for 20 years. They all really care about her future and where she’s going and how our family is doing.
Anna Cortés: It really gives us an opportunity to connect with our families, to really create that trust, strengthen those relationships, and really capture the differences in the communities that we serve.
Peyton: I’m finally in a position where my health is in a stable enough place for me to be able to share what I’ve gone through and how I can impact others who maybe can’t share.
Kathryn Burton: Everything that they contribute is heard, valued, seen, taken into account, and built into what we do.
Shelbie: Hopefully my experience and providing my feedback will make their experience better.
Peyton: This place has been so special to me and this is really a chance to make a difference.
Kathryn Burton: We couldn’t be who we are and we couldn’t do what we do without the patients and families. Their journeys, their stories, their passion, their desire to make something better for the next person really goes hand in hand with who we are as an organization. It truly creates an experience that is, above all, what we could do on our own.
