Sophia: A lot of people are different in many ways, but if people were the same, that’d be really boring.

Title: I Am Me: Sophia’s Story
Sophia: I have spina bifida. I’ve had it since birth and with that comes very many surgeries and recoveries. It’s been a second family to me.
Dr. Aaron Yengo-Kahn: Once you’re a patient, you have a unique aspect about you. What I give to my patients at a very basic level is just that I care. I want to see them excel and succeed in life and whatever it takes to get there, that’s my mission.
Sophia: I thought I couldn’t do it at one point. They always knew I could do it. After my spinal surgery, I walked for the first time and I was so happy for myself. I felt so much good self-esteem. They were so happy for me. They were cheering me on. They did it. They brought me to where I am today.
Dr. Aaron Yengo-Kahn: Seeing that progression from the first time in clinic to two surgeries later, being able to go to school dances, be hiking, doing things that she wants to do. That’s why we do this.
Sophia: Don’t apologize for being you. You know, I walk differently. But that’s just what makes me, me.
