After being admitted, you will be escorted to the fifth floor and to your child’s room by a staff member.
Your child’s nurse will welcome you and show you around the floor and have your child change into a hospital gown.
A nurse will measure your child’s heart and respiratory rates, temperature, height, weight and blood pressure.
An aide will take care of your child’s personal needs. They will also bring your child any comfort items they might want.
Child Life specialists have age appropriate activities to help your child such as tablets, books, toys, and crafts that you can use throughout their stay. There is also a playroom on the floor.
Your child will be seen by a pediatrician called a hospitalist during their stay. The hospitalist will examine your child and discuss a treatment plan with you.
Your nurse will check on your child frequently and give any medication or treatment that has been ordered. Other members of the healthcare team may also provide treatments.
Your child may need to have an I-V placed for medication and fluids.
If your child is in isolation, everyone entering your child’s room will need to wear gowns, gloves and masks.
Your child will have a call light in their room to call the nurse or other staff whenever they have any needs.
A fold-out bed will be provided for you to sleep in the same room as your child.
Your child’s meals will be provided. A member of the dietary team will come to your child’s room to get their meal choices.
Parents and other family members are welcome to get meals in our café.
When your child’s doctor decides your child is ready to go home, your child’s nurse will review the discharge paperwork and make sure your questions have been answered. This might take a couple of hours.
