Visiting the Emergency Department at CHOC at Mission Hospital

This short video will describe what you can expect at the emergency department at CHOC at Mission Hospital.

When you enter the emergency department, you will check in with a security officer.

A nurse will evaluate your child to help prioritize which patients should be seen first. This is called triaging.

An emergency department staff person in the lobby will get your child’s vital signs which may include blood pressure, temperature and oxygen saturation levels, and weight. Some diagnostic testing may begin in the lobby.

If you need to wait, you and your child will be brought to a waiting room dedicated to pediatric patients.

Once an exam room is available in the treatment area, you and your child will be brought back to be evaluated by an emergency department medical provider.

A caregiver will also ask you to help change your child into a gown for their exam.

When the medical provider and nurse arrive, they will discuss the plan of care and let you know approximately how long it will take.

After the tests are done and your child has received care, the nurse will discuss discharge instructions with you.

If your child needs further treatment that requires an overnight stay in the hospital, your care team will discuss the admission process and next steps.
