Weapons Detection System
Why We’re Introducing Weapon‑Detection Screening
As part of our ongoing effort to create a safe and healing environment for our patients, visitors, physicians and staff, a weapons detection system has been installed in the Bill Holmes Tower and emergency department entrances at Rady Children’s Hospital Orange County.
Beginning February 16, 2026, all hospital visitors must pass through the weapons detection system when entering our hospital’s main lobby and walk-in emergency department entrances.
What the Screening Detects
The system will detect weapons, including but not limited to firearms, knives, brass knuckles, mace/chemical agents, and other items intended for offensive use.
Anyone who declines to participate in the screening process will not be allowed entry into the facility.
Exceptions for Life-Threatening Emergencies
If your child is experiencing a life‑threatening emergency, they will be seen immediately.
They will be taken straight to triage and given a red wristband to show that screening has not yet been completed. The clinical team will perform the screening as soon as it is safe and appropriate.
Children arriving by ambulance or helicopter will also go directly to the care team without stopping for screening. Screening will be completed later when the medical team determines the right time.
One parent, guardian, or caregiver may stay with their child immediately, even if they have not yet been screened. They will complete screening as soon as it is appropriate so families are not separated during critical moments.
Individuals with medical devices—such as a pacemaker, an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD), or similar devices—can notify security personnel in advance and request an alternative screening method.
Future Plans
To help keep our patients, families, and staff safe, Rady Children’s Hospital Orange County is introducing enhanced weapon‑detection screening at our entrances. While all hospitals will be required by law to use these systems by 2027, we are choosing to implement this extra layer of protection sooner. We have plan to expand screening to other entrances soon.
