Radiology Referrals
There’s no place like CHOC when it comes to radiology and imaging services for kids. CHOC Radiology is the only specialized imaging facility in Orange County just for children and we offer a wide range of radiology services.
At CHOC, we make sure your child is comfortable and safe by using the most advanced equipment available with the lowest amount of radiation. Many children in adult facilities are potentially exposed to radiation doses up to 50 percent higher than at CHOC. Our equipment is safe and calibrated for kids, not adults.
Latest Technological Advances: EOSedge 2D/3D Imaging System
At CHOC, we believe in providing our patients with the best care and services, which is why we’re proud to offer the EOSedge system at our main hospital location in Orange. CHOC is one of the of the only hospitals across Southern California to offer the EOSedge system.
EOS exams are unique because they capture both the front and side view of your child’s body at the same time. The images can be used to generate 3D models and measurements, which provide a three-dimensional understanding of a patient’s medical condition and its complexity. This allows our doctors to make an accurate evaluation and tailor treatment plans for each patient.
The EOS exam is fast, painless, and uses a radiation dose that are “as low as reasonably achievable.” Reducing dose is particularly beneficial for all pediatric patients that are more sensitive to the cumulative effects of radiation. For this reason, EOSedge can reduce radiation exposure to even lower levels while still being capable of producing 3D models and measurements for assessing global skeletal deformities in follow-up pediatric examinations. Learn more about the benefits and safety features of the EOSedge.
Radiology Anesthesia
Anesthesia is sometimes required for your child to be able to stay still for their exam. The CHOC radiology department nurses work very closely with our board-certified pediatric anesthesiologists to provide the safest, most efficient care as well as comfort for your child.
Prior to your child’s appointment, a radiology nurse will contact you prior to your appointment to review your child’s medical history and give you specific instructions for the day of the exam. For safety, your child will have fasting restrictions. It is important to follow these guidelines otherwise the exam may need to be rescheduled. Your child will also need to see their primary doctor for a History and Physical pre-anesthesia clearance within 30 days of the scheduled procedure.
During your child’s appointment, a radiology staff member will escort the child and caregiver to a prep room to prepare for the procedure. During the procedure, the specially trained care team (technologist, RN, and MD) will continuously monitor your child’s heart rate, blood pressure, breathing and oxygen levels. Your child may need an intravenous (IV) line placed for the procedure.
After the exam, your child will be monitored in the recovery room until they are safe to go home. It is recommended to not plan events, return to school or sports the day of the exam as children can be sleepy, irritable or may not feel well after anesthesia.
CHOC is proud to be one of only a few medical centers in the country to have child life specialists working in a dedicated pediatric radiology and imaging department. Our radiology associates and child life specialists help children of all ages—babies through young adults—feel comfortable and safe.
Child Life Specialists utilize opportunities to normalize the healthcare setting through using age-appropriate videos, toys, and activities to help children feel more at ease with the imaging process. They engage children in medical equipment, pictures, and interactive tools to help children understand what to expect.
Our team uses videos, toys and activities to help children feel more at ease with the imaging process. We use medical equipment, pictures and interactive tools help children understand what to expect.
In addition, to promote a positive experience in our Radiology department, we allow parents or a caregiver to remain present during the examination, as well as music to listen to on an iPad during the child’s imaging,
movie goggles, glasses or head set to use during MRI This allows patients to watch movies or TV shows during their MRI, or sensory items such a chewie’s, pop-it’s, and stress balls.
Child life specialists are nationally certified through the Association of Child Life Professionals (ACLP) and obtain a bachelors or master’s degrees typically in child development, psychology, human development, or a child life program geared toward psychosocial and developmental needs of the child and family.
