Virtual School Nurse Education Series: Psychogenic non-epileptic seizure (PNES) Recognition & Support

Psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES) are often misread as epilepsy, defiance, or attention-seeking — leaving school nurses without a clear playbook for how to respond in the moment or support students long-term. This hour-long session gives school nurses a practical framework for recognizing functional/non-epileptic seizures, differentiating them from epileptic events, and responding calmly and appropriately when they occur at school.

Participants will leave with concrete strategies for building student care plans, communicating with families and medical providers, and coordinating support across school and community resources. The session also addresses the stigma and misunderstanding that often surround PNES, equipping nurses to advocate for students and educate colleagues.
