Refer a Patient

At CHOC, our hematology physicians and treatment team provides comprehensive, multidisciplinary evaluation and treatment for pediatric hematologic diseases. Here, you’ll find family-centered care that’s provided in an atmosphere of compassion and support.

What We Treat

The most advanced care is available for all forms of congenital or acquired blood and bone marrow disorders.

Our hematologists commonly treat:
  • All forms of anemia, including sickle cell anemia and thalassemia
  • White cell and immune disorders
  • Coagulation abnormalities, such as hemophilia, Von Willebrand’s disease and related bleeding disorders OR excessive clotting disorders such as thrombophilia, deep venous clots or stroke
  • Bleeding and clotting disorders as a result of illness or surgery in otherwise healthy children
  • Prevention of bleeding and clotting problems, with particular experience in caring for patients on cardiopulmonary bypass
  • Region IX Hemostasis/Thrombosis Program, including free educational materials for healthcare providers and parents
  • Regional center for the treatment of anemia caused by ingestion of lead
  • Outpatient care with access to short-term infusions for autoimmune and immunodeficiency disorders.

Our hematology physicians are also designated CCS providers for hemophilia and related bleeding disorders, sickle and thalassemia.

Family Support and At-Home Care

To help our patients and parents become more autonomous in disease management, we provide extensive education. A home healthcare program is also available, so that whenever possible, children may be at home with their families.

Regionally Recognized for Clinical Excellence

Our hematology physicians are board certified pediatric hematologists/oncologists. They provide medical direction for the inpatient and outpatient hematology services at CHOC and CHOC at Mission—and direct the CHOC Hemostasis/Thrombosis Program and Blood and Apheresis Center. In addition, CHOC hematologists are part of the multidisciplinary physician team serving the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). Comprehensive inpatient services are complemented by the multidisciplinary care provided by other pediatric subspecialists, nurses, pharmacists, therapists, clinical dietitians, child psychologists and social workers.

Internationally Recognized for Immune, Autoimmune and Inflammation Research

Hematology physicians play an integral role in the CHOC Immunology and Inflammation Research Consortium, collaborating with colleagues at Stanford University, Scripps Research Institute and the University of California campuses at Davis, San Diego and San Francisco. They have examined the role of genetic background and immune function in several large-scale research studies, to help identify children predisposed to damage from an overactive inflammatory response, autoimmune disease or immune deficiency.

Their efforts have resulted in world recognition and awards from several prestigious organizations, including the National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control, Maternal and Child Health and Development Bureau, Juvenile Diabetes Foundation and Arthritis Foundation. They also participate in clinical research with pharmaceutical companies, providing patients with access to the latest medications and treatment available.

Related Program
