Dr. Courtney Thornburg is a board-certified pediatrician and pediatric hematologist who offers expert care for babies, kids and teens with a wide variety of hematologic conditions. As an expert in pediatric hematology, she specializes in inherited and acquired bleeding and clotting disorders, anticoagulation management, and prevention of hospital acquired venous thromboembolism.

Dr. Courtney Thornburg serves as Director of the Pediatric Thrombosis Program. She works closely with the Heart Institute to manage anticoagulants and antiplatelet therapy for children with congenital and acquired heart disease. She is actively involved with hospital acquired venous thromboembolism prevention.

Dr. Courtney Thornburg is affiliated with the American Society of Hematology, the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, the Hemostasis and Thrombosis Research Society, the American Thrombosis and Hemostasis Network, the Venous Thromboembolism Network US, the National Bleeding Disorders Foundation, the World Federation of Hemophilia Shared Decision Making Expert Working Group, and the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis and conducts clinical research and quality improvement focused on improving health and well-being for children with blood disorders. She was previously the Chief Medical Research Officer for the Division of Blood Diseases and Resources, National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, National Institutes of Health where she provided oversight and guidance for extramural funded clinical trials including cell and gene therapy trials. In this role, she received an NHLBI 2025 Director’s Innovation Award. She is dedicated to teaching and training the next generation of hematologists. She previously developed and directed the Pediatric Hemostasis and Thrombosis Fellowship Program, was faculty for the Mentor Clinician Program, and won the 2024 William R. Roberts Faculty Teaching Award at Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego, UC San Diego.

Our hematologists commonly treat:
  • All forms of anemia, including sickle cell anemia and thalassemia
  • White cell and immune disorders
  • Coagulation abnormalities, such as hemophilia, Von Willebrand’s disease and related bleeding disorders OR excessive clotting disorders such as thrombophilia, deep venous clots or stroke
  • Bleeding and clotting disorders as a result of illness or surgery in otherwise healthy children
  • Prevention of bleeding and clotting problems, with particular experience in caring for patients on cardiopulmonary bypass
  • Region IX Hemostasis/Thrombosis Program, including free educational materials for healthcare providers and parents
  • Regional center for the treatment of anemia caused by ingestion of lead
  • Outpatient care with access to short-term infusions for autoimmune and immunodeficiency disorders.
