Children's Oncology Group (COG) / Clinical Trials
Through our Children’s Oncology Group (COG) membership, CHOC received a prestigious Phase 1 clinical trial designation, making us the only facility in the Southwestern United States—and one of only 21 in North America—able to offer these alternative, experimental treatments. Children’s Hospital of Orange County, a member of the Children’s Oncology Group, provides patients with access to participate in state of the art clinical research trials. A clinical trial is a research study that aims to determine the most effective treatment for a particular disease. Each trial is a result of a very detailed study of factors associated with the standard treatment (the current best) and variables that may lead to an improvement in survival rates or a reduction in side effects or late effects of treatment.
Currently, there are 59 active studies in the area of pediatric oncology specifically designed to improve clinical outcome, minimize potential side effects of treatments, find the cause of certain types of cancer, and limit the long term effects of therapy.
We have clinical trials open for leukemia and cancers of every organ system, either for newly diagnosed or relapsed patients. We also collaborate with major pharmaceutical companies to conduct clinical trials on new chemotherapeutic agents and supportive care to alleviate the side effects of chemotherapy.
