CHOC Blood Bank
CHOC relies on volunteer blood donors like you, your friends, neighbors and co-workers to meet the needs of our patients. Every time our volunteers donate, they leave knowing they are having direct impact on the recovery of a child. Your blood donation gives children a better chance at a healthy life.
Blood Donation Center Procedures
Whole Blood Donation
Whole blood donation is a simple, life-saving procedure that typically takes about 10-15 minutes. During this process, we collect about a pint of blood, which can be used to help multiple children in need. Your donation can be crucial for patients undergoing surgeries, those with blood disorders or children battling cancer. By donating whole blood, you’re providing essential red blood cells, plasma and platelets that can make a significant difference in a child’s recovery and overall health.
Platelet Donation
Platelet donation is a specialized procedure that takes a bit longer (about 2 hours) but is incredibly valuable for many of our patients. Platelets are tiny cells in your blood that help form clots and stop bleeding. They are especially critical for children with cancer, blood disorders or those undergoing chemotherapy. These treatments often reduce a patient’s platelet count, putting them at risk for dangerous bleeding. Your platelet donation can provide immediate help to these vulnerable patients, supporting their treatment and recovery. One platelet donation can provide enough platelets for multiple pediatric transfusions, making a huge impact on several young lives.
