Miles has been a patient at CHOC since birth. Born premature and with kidney failure, he spent 2 months in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. His chances of surviving were slim to none, but he made it. On his third birthday Miles received a kidney transplant. The match: his mother, Marta.
Today, Miles is a vibrant 7-year-old. Marta has served as the parent services coordinator in the NICU at CHOC for five years.
This photo, entitled "Smiles Among Us - Mother and Son Bond During the Road to Recovery", was chosen from more than 200 entries to be displayed at the NACHRI Children's Hospital Photo Exhibit 2007. The exhibit will also be displayed on Capitol Hill to encourage Congress to consider how legislative decisions impact childrens hospitals and the children they serve.
