The Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) is a 12-room designated area adjacent to the PICU. It includes two fully-equipped procedure rooms that enable our physicians to perform lifesaving surgery on children who otherwise could not be transported out of the unit. All of the CVICU rooms are outfitted with leading-edge technology equal to the demands of monitoring children after complex operations. In addition, our CVICU has specially trained cardiac nurses to meet the critical management needs of this patient population. Through the CHOC Heart Institute, more than 250 cardiac procedures are performed annually and CHOC is the only facility in Orange County to perform pediatric open-heart surgery and therapeutic catheterization procedures. Collectively, The CHOC Heart Institute has treated thousands of children with congenital heart problems.
